The lap and recreation pools are separated by a glass wall. Not only does this offer visual continuity, but it creates separate spaces that can respond to the differing dehumidification needs of each pool, and therefore reduce energy costs. South-facing glass helps heat the spaces, further cutting back on energy consumption. Strategically placed, roll-down curtains provide privacy for groups that must remain segregated from the opposite sex while in their bathing suits.

The designers say: “The architectural theme is a neutral enclosure surrounding sparking pools of water, with varied tile, lighting and colorful aquatic features. The overarching goal was to connect this setting to other exterior and interior spaces.”
This aquatics facility at the Rainier Beach Community Center is located next to the local high school, but contains amenities meant to attract everyone. The aquatics portion of the complex, built at a cost of approximately $6 million, measures 24,400 square feet and includes three bodies of water. The six-lane lap pool with 1-meter springboard and a competitive-level scoreboard help attract lap swimmers, and enable the facility to host swim meets and water polo competitions.
