Mythological proportions

With its latest expansion, Atlantis Dubai Aquaventure has become the largest in the world.

Set in the United Arab Emirates, this waterpark was created to enhance the experience of the high-end clientele at the Atlantis resorts.

The design and theming are meant to reflect the environs, with the structures crafted to look as if they had risen from the seafloor and onto the palm-shaped, man-made island. Corals and aquas combine the aquatic with desert. On the stone work in Immortal Falls Cliff Jump and Trident Tower, visitors see what appear to be etchings from a lost, ancient civilization. Splasher’s Cove includes aquatic flooring that looks like ocean waves approaching the children’s slides. Medusa’s Lair, with its racing tube slides, features imagery of the mythological figure to add to the overall theme.

Of the now 55 1/2-acre waterpark, the expansion itself occupies 13 1/2 acres.

As a major part of the addition, the team transformed a lazy river into the high-intensity Raging Rapids, a fast-moving, high-pressured action river that sends users throughout the park. The Trident Tower Complex includes water slides and water coasters such as the Odyssey of Terror and the Shockwave.

Splasher’s Cove and Lagoon appeals to smaller children with gentler slides and sprays.

For more adventurous youngsters, the new expansion also includes the world’s first kid’s rally racer and tornado slide.

Other features include Vortex with its two drop slides; Black Out speed slides; and a four-lane mat racer called Hydra Racer.
