Holistic approach

This 115,000-square-foot center was designed for both exertion and peace, as it houses the physical athletics programs for this private K-12 prep school, along with its growing wellness repertoire, which includes mindfulness meditation practices, yoga and nutrition education.

The natatorium includes an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool with video matrix scoreboard and an elevated seating gallery for up to 200 spectators.

Electrochromic glass windows on the exterior walls, which automatically tint depending on the time of day, allow plenty of natural light while minimizing glare on the water’s surface.

The building also houses a cardio fitness center and multiple specialized spaces for basketball, squash, fencing, wrestling, free weights and track. Classrooms, offices, a wellness studio and teaching kitchen round out the offerings.

The LEED Gold-certified facility includes recycled materials such as reclaimed wood paneling salvaged from a church. When it came to budget considerations, the team looked at operational as well as upfront costs. They estimate that energy modeling reduced operating costs by nearly 60%.

The facility was designed to naturally integrate into the rocky hillside, with exterior materials chosen to blend with the woodlands. The large windows make the outdoor environs a key part of the interior space’s aesthetic.
