Designers of the J. Leonard Levy Family Wellness Center Warm-Water Therapy Pool at Shalom Park in Aurora, Colo., catered to the mostly senior clientele not only in overall pool design, but also through their choice of surface materials. Because users often are challenged with sight or neurological impairments, the team selected wall and floor finishes that could be easily distinguished. Extra-wide corridors accommodate wheelchairs. Those less steady on their feet find assistance from a variety of grab bars and railings, as well as deck surfaces that are nonslip but gentle on the feet. Purple, blue, beige and white accents tie the aquatics center in with the rest of the wellness facility, aesthetically complement the water and create a soothing environment. Undulating acoustic ceiling baffles help control sound, which can become loud as instructors project their voices to accommodate the hearing impaired. They also reinforce the water theme by visually mimicking waves.
