To arrive at this design, the design team and officials for the city of Newton, Kan. held extensive conversations with staff and gathered public input.
They learned that citizens were looking for more exciting features in a new pool, with seniors more interested in a facility that could accommodate programming targeted to their demographic.
To entertain younger visitors, the facility offers an interactive play structure, spray park, floatables, family slide, open flume slides, climbing wall, diving board, and current channel.
Competitive swimmers in the community were also accommodated, with a six-lane, 25-yard competition area, with plenty of deck space to allow easy traffic flow during larger competitions.
Bright colors were used throughout the complex to inject energy and engagement in each visit.
To conserve resources and put less of a strain on taxpayers, the team specifies regenerative filters, allowing the operators to minimize water consumption while maintaining safe water quality parameters.
To further stretch the budget, part of the original facility was salvaged, repaired and renovated. The deep end of the original pool was kept, as was an existing water slide, which was restored and recoated. This saved the city tens of thousands of dollars in construction, enabling it to make the lazy river longer than originally planned, and to add a family slide and multiple shade canopies to the original scope.
