New UL Standard Addresses Pool/Spa Lifts

The language applies to electrically operated lifts.

Third-party laboratory UL has published a standard for electric pool/spa lifts.

The new standard addresses safety and basic performance of the units. It applies to portable lift chairs, stationary lift chairs, stationary lifts with wheelchair platforms and electric and electromechanical lifts. It covers fixed installations falling under the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as portable residential lifts.

UL developed the standard in response to the latest National Electrical Code update. According to UL, some also had requested a standard that distinguishes these lifts from devices used in medical settings. Additionally, much of the language reflects requirements in the International Code Council’s “Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities Standard.”

The specifications do allow for lifts that are controlled from the deck area, in addition to self-controlled units.

The standard bears the number UL 60335-2-1000 and the title Standard for Safety for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances: Particular Requirements of Electrically Powered Pool Lifts.
