The City Council of Wilmington, Del., voted to rename a local pool house after Vice President Joe Biden.

The Brown-Burton-Winchester-Memorial Park Pool House will be renamed the United States Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Aquatic Center.
The ordinance states that before Biden began his political career he worked as the only white lifeguard at the pool in 1962, during a period of racial dissent. It goes on to state that Biden has often related stories about how his lifeguard experience helped shape who he became as an adult by giving him a chance to interact with people of all backgrounds, deal with differing views, and understand more about how people learn or are taught to respect each other.

Biden later became a New Castle, Del. City Council member and went on to represent Delaware for 36 years as a U.S. Senator.
