A Fort Lauderdale, Fla., lifeguard was fired from his job shortly after being arrested and accused of attempting to have sex with a minor.

The Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel reports that Joshua Asseraf, 22, was arrested at a Broward County hotel, where he attempted to meet up with a 9-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity. When coordinating the hotel meeting, Asseraf believed he had been communicating with the girl’s father via an online message board and texting. He actually was communicating with an agent from the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force, as part of a sting operation.

There were no allegations that Asseraf engaged in any improper activity at the aquatics center where he worked. A representative from the city of Fort Lauderdale confirmed that Asseraf had worked there as a part-time pool lifeguard since mid-March. His employment was terminated four days after his August 29 arrest.

Asseraf has not yet been formally charged, but he was arrested on the allegation of using a cell phone to attempt to engage in sexual activity with a minor, according to the Sentinel.

Asseraf was born in France and still has ties to that country, therefore U.S. Magistrate Judge Lurana Snow ruled that he was a flight risk and that he is to remain in jail while the case is pending.
