Starfish Aquatics Institute has released a position paper to guide learn-to-swim operators as they prepare to reopen.

Swim instruction has presented a particular challenge to reopening, as managers and directors weigh the difficulties in maintaining social distancing when teaching new and young swimmers, and the safety implications of not providing the community with swim lessons for the season.

“Use of Social/Physical Distancing Practices During Swimming Lesson Programs,” which can be downloaded, outlines steps to take before offering swim lessons, best practices for social distancing, and strategies for maximizing use in a safe manner.

For instance, to facilitate social distancing, the organization recommends beginning by dividing the pool’s total square footage by 113 square feet — the radius of a 6-foot circle. It also suggests instructors wear face masks if they’re in the water but will not submerge their faces.

SAI also offers free webinars that can be used as in-service.
