Our fourth and final round of the 2017 AI Summer Lifeguard Challenge was just for kicks — an exercise for extra credit that was no less challenging for it.
In this bonus round, participants were tasked with demonstrating an in-water ventilation, a tricky drill that requires timing and precision. (As it happens, this drill coincides with Challenge Judge Pete DeQuincy’s latest Lifesavers column.)
The result is a three-way tie between California teams Temecula — which crushed July’s challenge — and UC Riverside, and Team Evanston out of Illinois.
Says DeQuincy: “Of all the entries, these stood out in their communication, their teamwork, and their ability to be flexible and improvise. This is the caliber of proficiency one would like to see in their lifeguard team when it comes to responding to emergencies. Nicely done.”

That concludes this year’s edition of the AI Summer Lifeguard Challenge, but we have one more big announcement yet to make. Later this month, we’ll crown the overall Challenge winner. Stay tuned!
AI wants to give a sincere thank you to all the teams that participated. We were positively inundated with video submissions from teams coast to coast.
We hope your lifesaving skills are a little sharper than they were at the beginning of the season. (After all, that’s what it’s all about.)
As DeQuincy likes to say, “Good luck, and keep training.”
